Max Ernst

[German-born French Dadaist/Surrealist Painter, 1891-1976]

• Relationships: Ernst married four times: to Luise Straus, Marie-Berthe Aurenche, art collector Peggy Guggenheim, and Surrealist artist Dorothea Tanning.
Ernst's son is the abstract painter Jimmy Ernst.
• Browse all:  German artists / French artists

I was no longer able to feel at ease in the somewhat puritanical and disembodied intellectualism of the more orthodox Surrealists. I feel, at heart, a far greater affinity with the German Romantics than many of the French Surrealists...
- Max Ernst, 1962, quoted by Edouard Roditi

Framing Tip:
When framing posters, the mat color can help integrate an artwork into the decor of the room. But a mat must first and foremost complement the art.

"Look Inside" and "Search Inside" Books at Amazon
Look Inside Books:Selections from the books listed below are scanned in, in high res. Text is clearly readable and art reproductions vary from so-so to excellent. Don't miss the fact that you can usually zoom in via the "View" drop-down menu, along the top row of Amazon's Online Reader.
Search Inside Books:Same as "Look Inside", except that the entire book is scanned in, and the text is fully searchable. This is an unbelievable resource, for research and especially for previewing a book when making the decision to buy.
Note: Some "Search Inside" features are limited to people signed in to an account which has previously made a purchase at Amazon.
